A Friend in Need
For hundreds of years, Leilon was known only as a small mining town that sprawled along the High Road between Neverwinter and Waterdeep. Prospectors and mining camps in the Sword Mountains would sell their finds in Leilon, and Waterdhavian entrepreneurs would send wagons north to buy the copper, nickel, and silver at bargain prices, then take it south to sell in the bustling metropolis. However, the town’s fortunes changed with the arrival of Vincentio Dellagato.
For whatever reason, the renowned adventurer took a liking to the town and decided to make it his home once he retired from adventuring. He used his magical resources and called in considerable favors to dredge out a proper harbor, then founded a trading company which he called Moorguard Mercantile. Dellagato proved to be an adept businessman. Moorguard Mercantile was soon trading up and down the Sword Coast, from Icewind Dale to Amn, and the flow of commerce through Leilon bolstered the city immensely. First came new inns and taverns, followed by tradesmen, moneylenders, and artisans. Even the town’s defenses improved – the old wooden palisade was repaired, gates were built, and the Lances of Leilon grew from 200 brave volunteers to 300 trained soldiers.
In the century since, Leilon’s fortunes have waxed and waned with that of the Dellagato family. Though they have never taken an active role in ruling the town’s 3,000 residents, the Dellagatos have nevertheless been their patrons. When Moorguard Mercantile suffered under the haphazard management of Braxus II (Trey Dellagato’s father), the diminished trade led to many residents to abandon the town for the greater opportunities promised by the cities of Neverwinter and Waterdeep. The current Lord of Leilon, Zandar Falbiddeon, remains friendly with the Dellagato family and is a frequent guest at their manor of Silvertop Hold. Nevertheless, he sees Moorguard Mercantile as a thing of the past, and has turned his attention to attracting new mining concerns, hoping to renew the town’s fortunes through proven industries.
